14 Best ways to cure cold and cough for babies

Those sleepless and restless nights, when your baby has cold n cough. You rush to a pharmacy to give them some medicine but nothing is really working out. So you probably need to stay up whole night and try to comfort the baby.

Here are a few home remedies you should try before rushing to visit a doctor. These remedies are safe to use since they are made with herbs and natural ingredients. It would really help your baby and you too.

Breast milk

Babies are too flimsy to give them any kind of medication. Their immunity system is developing with mom's milk. Your milk is 'Sanjivani' to your baby. The best medicine for them is your breast milk for any soreness or cough or cold. 'Cause it is full of antibodies which improve your baby's immunity system and gives strength to fight with germs, viruses or bacteria.

Nothing can beat mom's milk. Try to breastfeed your baby until they are at least 1/1.5 years old. Avoid giving outside milk unless your baby's pediatrician suggests you to do so.

Turmeric and rock salt with Milk

A hot glass of milk with turmeric is the best homemade remedy for having a cough. It is not only for kids, but it's also even good for adults too. If your baby has a sore throat and he keeps coughing, give him/her 2-3 spoons of milk with a pinch of turmeric. You can add a pinch of powdered rock salt in the milk with turmeric. It's completely okay if you want to give them more. It is completely safe.

Honey

Honey or Madhu or Shahad is again a good source of antibiotics. It has glucose and monosaccharide which has vitamins and minerals to protect our body against bacteria and viruses.

Mostly American pediatricians say no for giving honey to an infant. But As I have read about honey in Ayurveda book and some informatory blogs, they say it's completely safe for infants too. Don't forget to give your baby honey when they have a cough.

Honey with Ginger Juice

Take one teaspoon of honey plus Half a teaspoon of ginger juice. Mix them well. Give this mixture to your kid twice a day but make sure that you give this mixture once in the night just before bedtime. It is great medicine for a sore throat.

Honey with Tulsi and ginger juice

It is one more yet important mixture with honey. If you can find Tulsi(Indian Basil), mince it with ginger and take the juice out of it. Mix this juice with honey and give it to your child.

Honey with Black Pepper

It is again an effective homemade remedy as with ginger juice. Take 1tsp Honey and 2-3 powdered/crushed black pepper. Mix them well. Give this mixture to your baby. For best results give it to them 2 times a day, especially just before they go to bed.

In these remedies, honey is the key ingredient. You can give honey with multiple ingredients to create a variety of flavors. Remember honey and home medicines are completely safe for infants/kids.

Ajwain(Carom seeds) and Garlic:

Garlic and Ajwain have anti-viral and antibiotic properties. You can give this combination in any form. For instance, Either you make a thin paste and make your baby lick your fingertip dipped in this paste or roast both things together and make a potli or like a teabag. First, make your baby smell this potli for few times and then keep it on their chest. It would help in reducing congestion and opens nostrils.

Oil Massage

Oil massage with lukewarm mustard oil would get your baby calm down. Light hand massage with mustard oil is soothing and calming therapy. Your baby would love it and go to sound sleep in no time. In addition, you can add some minced garlic cloves to the oil during warming it up. Massage with this infused oil on kid's whole body but mainly on the chest, palm and downside of their feet.

Saffron paste

Saffron's medicinal value in Ayurved is very rich. Take a few strands of Kesar or Saffron and few drops of water to make a thin paste out of it. Put this paste on the baby's forehead. It helps in cold and cough too because of its heat.

Saline drops

Pediatricians usually prescribe saline drops for Infants. It helps to clear out nostrils and prevents nose from getting crusty. Before applying it, clean your baby's nose with wet wipes and keep his/her head a little tilted back so that drops wouldn't flow out.

Infusing vapors

Kids who can sit and inhale infusing vapors, make them sit in front of steaming hot water pot, add eucalyptus oil or Nilgiri oil, put a towel around them(the pot should be inside the towel) and ask them to inhale the vapor or steam. If kids are too small to take steam you can use humidifier or steamer but don't forget to add either of these oils. Or you can take you, baby, inside the bathroom when you are taking a bath with hot water. Steam or vapors in the bathroom can help in softening and clearing your baby's stuffed nose.

Kada

The 'Kada' is the soup of Adrak(ginger), tulsi(Indian Basil), Dal Chini(cinnamon sticks), Ajwain(carom seeds), Kali Mirch(Black Pepper), long(cloves) Gud or Jaggery( brown sugar), Tez Patta(bay leaves).

Put everything in a pan and add 2 glasses of water. Boil it, till it comes down to half a glass. Let it cool down to lukewarm, give one-one spoon of this soup to your kid twice in a day. It helps in cough, cold and fever too.

Vegetable stock soup with lemongrass and black pepper

Anything warm to drink will help your child. If you have an Infant, you can give them warm vegetable stock with a pinch of black pepper and salt to taste otherwise you can give your kid crunchy vegetable soup with a pinch of salt and black pepper. Add lemongrass, celery, and Carrots in your soup for sure.

Jaggery soup with Black Pepper

I would call it my mom's ancestral recipe, which was handed down by my grandmother to my mom. This soup is really good for everyone. Serve it hot to an adult. And feed this soup to your kid warm or lukewarm as your kid can have it. You can increase the level of spiciness with additional crushed/powdered black pepper.
It clears out the throat or nasal congestion and keeps your body warm with ease.

Recipe of the Jaggery soup

  1. Take a spoon of ghee(pure desi ghee) in a heavy bottom pan
  2. Add 2 spoons of whole wheat flour to it and stir it till it gets golden brown.
  3. Now add jaggery mixed 2 glasses of water(sweetness as per taste) to the pan.
  4. Add black pepper powder (according to taste)
  5. Stir it till it thickens as soup.

Use the remedies according to kids' age- for instance, if your kid is an infant, neither you can give them ginger tea nor treat them with infusing water vapors. You need to go for a humidifier adding few drops of eucalyptus oil or Nilgiri oil.

Summary

Basically, there is no fixed recipe to prepare any home remedy. Since all ingredients are from nature and everything goes with the other.

Don't take your child to a doctor immediately because once your kid catches an infection, it will remain at least 2-3 days. Try home remedies first before giving them any medicine.

In the end, develop the habit of staying clean in your kid. Tell them to wash their faces, hands, and feet after playing or after coming from school. Keep your house clean and tidy. Use floor and carpet cleaner to keep your home germs free.

Eat healthy and fresh food. Add vegetables and pulses in your regular diet. Use turmeric and garlic in your daily cooking.

These are very simple steps to keep your family away from any kind of infection.

"Are you satisfied with your kid's language teacher?"-Think It Again..

"Are you satisfied  with your kid's language teacher?"-Think It Again.

One day, after coming from school, my daughter came to me and asked," Mom which preposition will fit this sentence?" She showed me her worksheet which was checked by her English teacher. I read the sentence and told her, "The answer you have written is incorrect, fix it."
She replied,"I was also sure that it's a wrong answer but teacher made us write this word in blank space to be filled with given preposition.
I was certain but still, I googled to make sure my daughter gets the correct answer and I found it was incorrect preposition what she had written. I asked her to check with the teacher again so that she won't make any mistakes in her exams.

I mean, If she is filling it with the correct preposition but her teacher would think it's wrong. It's very important to do exactly what the teacher thinks or tells students to do so. Sometimes it becomes prejudice against language.

The next day, my daughter went to her teacher to get to know whether it's right or wrong. The Teacher saw that sentence and asked her to go back to her seat and said, "If I have checked your worksheet than how can it be incorrect. Next time don't come to me with such stupid questions."

I got so pissed off by thinking about the lack of knowledge of the teacher. It's not the first time we were facing this problem. Other language teachers too aren't having a good command of the respective language. We had some problems in Marathi too. They don't do homework before teaching in the class. Sometimes we find many printing mistakes in the worksheet but teachers don't bother to fix them. Kids are learning the wrong lessons year by year because of inexperienced and inefficient teaching staff. It's not only about my daughter's teachers or school, but I also found that it's a very common subject to talk about in evening gossips with other moms.

Nonetheless, I didn't have another choice but to ask my daughter to write the same answer in exams as the teacher had taught them. Since we don't get to see the final exam sheets, and my daughter would lose marks because of that confusion. But I did tell her the right answer too. I found this "The Best" maneuver.

I just want to add here that if they could use a few minutes to do homework before teaching anything in the class, it would help them and students too... Or they should just use the Internet to keep themselves updated instead of going with their half-knowledge and lack of command on the second language.

So ladies if you feel the same, you should confront your kid's teacher in PTM or raise this problem in front of everyone in the open house of the school.
Leave a comment about what you think!

Oral Care of a Toddler

Oral Care of a Toddler

You may have lots of questions in your mind about the healthy habits of your children. The biggest concern is to develop the habit of cleanliness and hygiene.  Passing on the habit of good oral care would be a good lesson to your kid in order to teach them a healthy living. Because a healthy mouth is a leads to a healthy life.

Usually, a question lingers in everyone's mind, "When to start brushing baby's teeth and How do I care for their teeth?"

Brushing: For developing good habits in a child, we should start showing them as early as they are ready to learn and observe. Child specialists recommend that start showing and talking to them about cleanliness as soon as they turn one. As they are ready to develop motor skills and are excited to do anything u do. Kids do observe you closely and do exactly you do. So yeah, watch yourself while doing or speaking. They are going to learn from you.
And yeah, let them try first, later you help them. Teaching the value of a healthy mouth means teaching them to brush twice a day and showing them the proper way of brushing.

Visit the dentist: Dentists recommend that kids should have their regular dental check-ups and it should be started when they are 2. By this, you as the parent get a chance to learn about your child's dental health, growth, and hygiene and to learn about healthy ways of oral care.

Eating Habits:
You as the parent need to learn and practice healthy habits and nutrient diets for your toddler. Their intake should be full of calcium, vitamins, and other nutrients for healthy teeth and gum. A proper diet keeps our body strong enough and keeps us healthy.

Following these easy steps of oral care, you can keep your toddler healthy and strong.

Keep Smiling!!

How to Deal with Toddlers in their terrible two

How to deal with Toddlers in their terrible two

What it could be like when you want to say something but you can't. It would be frustrating, right! It is the same with my boy or any other toddler in the world.

     PC: mykidmyblog.blogspot.com

Toddlers, especially the age of 1.5 -2.5 yrs old are in the "Terrible Two" phase.  Sometimes, they are so happy and playful then suddenly the switch triggers ON. They want to tell you something but can't express it since they can't talk, then they start being cranky and end up crying non-stop. When the reason is obvious like, they are hurt or hungry or sleepy, it's easy to understand their demands and easy to console them. But sometimes it gets very hard to understand the reason for crying. I believe, all moms of a  Toddler do face this terrible two-phase. They keep trying to figure out what's going on with their child.

This is the age when they start walking around and try to explore new things with their tiny-winy feet. They get so excited when they see new things and hope to catch them. So let them be an explorer and let them experience new things to learn more and more.

My boy who is 1.5 years old now, whenever he sees something new and tries to get that, he observes that thing deeply. While observing he gives a big smile with a hint of frown and says, "This". It was his first clear word which he used to use for almost everything. And That moment used to be our "get activated " moment. We used to run to see what is in his hand now since he loves to throw things down from the balcony. We really had "Oh" moment a lot of time. Now we have a net guard on our balcony which literally spoiled the view of the national park.

We, including me, my husband, and my 8 yrs old "well-behaved" daughter love his cute vicious smile. He is super-d-duper naughty. He definitely gives a smile when he is up to something or he's done something.

Let me tell you something, nurturing and nourishing a kid isn't an easy job. We need to be very careful and responsible for anything we do. Here are a few tips which can help you to understand kids' behavior and to know how to deal with it.

                                   PC: @TemptingTastebuds

  • We are the first teacher in their lives. We need to understand their needs, watch their behavior, and teach them how to behave appropriately at home or in public. Treat your child the same whether you are at home or in public. If they start screaming or crying for something when you are passing a toy store, don't go back and give them that toy. Try to talk to them and distract them with something else. Likewise asking them for some help or play with the toy that they already have.
  • When they are throwing tantrums, they are emotionally frazzled.  You need to stay calm and don't reinforce your escalated emotion. If your temper goes high, your child will learn and will behave the same. So try to avoid making eye contact with them when they are throwing tantrums and wait until they calm down. Once they are, talk to them about it and tell them about alternatives.
  • We are "The role model" for them. Kids do learn everything that they see, so do the same as you want from your kid. They observe you when you talk or eat or do anything. You can't expect your child more than what you really do.
  • Their senses of understanding are developing at this age and they try to communicate. Sometimes they become aggressive and start biting or hitting. Don't worry!! It's part of their development. But of course, we need to let them know that, "The behavior is unacceptable". Teach them how to ask for what they want and praise them when they really follow you.
                                                                                                                 PC: @TemptingTastebuds

We need to be aware and pre-knowing their target that, "What is gonna be next?" As I did mention above that my toddler loves to throw things down whether it's from our balcony down or from bed to the floor.  He throws things down and tries to locate them again.  It's part of developing motor skills. This activity needs well-developed fine motor skills when they open their fingers and let the thing fall down freely. They are learning coordination between their action and their sight. Again, we need to give reactions to them about good throw and bad throw or what is okay if they throw and not okay.
  • In this phase, the child learns to say No first. Let them own it !! Give them two choices for everything to avoid the No factor. Give them a positive environment. For instance, ask them if they want to have juice or milk. Or, do you wanna wear a  pink skirt or a flower print legging. Two choices are enough to keep them happy and make them independent to make their own choices.
  • Sharing is a good way to develop social skills. When your kid is playing with his/her friend/s, encourage them for sharing their toys and teach them to wait for their turn. Yeah! Don't forget your part of appreciation when your kid does share his/her toys.
  • Let them help you. If your child likes to help you in your daily chores like keeping things in the right place or spreading sheets with you or putting toys back in the basket or the shelf,   appreciate their efforts and encourage them by cleaning their toys up with them.
                          PC: @TemptingTastebuds

My boy has developed the habit of keeping things back to the place where they belong. When we are done with our morning tea/milk, he takes cups inside and keeps them on the kitchen platform on his own and he brings snacks box out when he is hungry and after having snacks he takes boxes inside the kitchen and keeps them on the right place.

Another incident I want to share with you guys - Once he took me to the kitchen to get a mop for wiping milk from the floor, I took the mop from my kitchens' windowsill but didn't close the window. He stepped ahead and closed the window by himself and then he took me to the area where I had to wipe the milk from the floor. That was my OMG! (happily) moment.

These are a few tips to handle toddlers' terrible two stages without making it more troublesome. Give your child enough space to make them independent. Let them grow naturally but steer them in a good direction to have a  beautiful, healthy, and disciplined life.

Having siblings is a blessing...

Having a sibling is a blessing...

Grown-up Picture of both kids
PC:@TemptingTastebuds

My boy has turned 17 months old. Today I got a chance and thought to start blogging again after a short break and share my experience about being a mom again with my readers.

Happy Moments: I want to tell you guys, how happy I was when I had my second baby in my arms. It was an ''out of the world" feeling and feeling of being proud of myself  "Yes, we did it".

We never thought we would plan for the second child. We were not ready until my daughter started asking me, "when are we going to have a baby. I want a baby brother or a baby sister. All my friends have a sister or a brother". Gradually she became more adamant about it. We did spend plenty of time discussing and thinking over it. Finally, we got agreed and took a wise decision to have another baby.

It was a beautiful moment when Aryaman (yeah! that's my boy) came in my arm and I felt like it is happening to me for the first time. My husband and I were being so careful while holding him for the first time and after or giving him a bath as if it's new for us. Actually, it was totally a "new experience" for both of us as we planned for our second child after quite a gap.

I have a beautiful and loving 8 years old girl plus a handsome and mischievous 17-month-old boy. Yes! Quite a gap between the two. People do ask me curiously, "How do I feel or I manage with the second baby since we did plan after seven years". My answer to them is, "Yes! In my case I am certainly enjoying being a mom of two without hassle. We are having a fun time with the baby and trying out all the possible ways to make those "Happy Moments".

Role of Big Sister: We were worried at the beginning of my first trimester. My husband and I surely did talk about how my daughter going to react when the baby will arrive. Would she be OK or will show some tantrums about not getting enough attention after having a baby ?? Since we have read/seen/heard a lot about it, we started talking to her about how it's going to be once the baby will arrive.

But I feel that we are blessed with the most adorable and sincere girl. She never complains about anything or I would say, she has been a big help in nourishing the baby in a good way. When the baby was born, she was 7 years old only and with it, she started behaving like a responsible Big Sister. If the baby gets up from his nap and starts crying, she would run to rock him till he sleeps again. She would ask me to bring the baby down in the play area and in her school too to show her friends and play with him.

1day old baby and big sis

Playing and Learning Partner: When he was 8 months old, he started standing by the couch and started walking when he was 11 months old. Now the baby is almost 1.5 years old, big enough to play with the big sister. They actually play hide and seek a lot together. My daughter loves to show him how to play with his Puppy and friends learning table. In the role of big sister, she shows him how to do things like eating and drinking properly. Sometimes they both sing and dance to nursery rhymes. That makes me feel happy and proud parent.

Copy Cat: My son is a real copy cat, he does always try to do the same as his big sister does. Whenever my daughter practices her Kathak tukda (Indian classical dance form), the sound of ghungroo makes him happy and he actually stamps his feet and twirls with her. When a big sis says something he tries to copy her and try to repeat it in the same way, LoL !!

His first word was "This" for everything, then started saying few more words. Nowadays, he is trying to say a new word ba-ba i.e. [bad boy], the word my daughter said to him once, when they were playing with his doodle.

I make them sit together when they both are having milk or supper. They both feed each other and have fun while eating.  She is Best buddy to him, he likes to play, eat and do all kinda masties with her but more than that if  I say, 'No' for anything he goes directly to his sister with cute lil' puppy face, and my daughter, she picks him up immediately and asks me if we can give him "the thing".

On his first birthday
PC: @TemptingTastebuds

Yess!! they do fight: That is not only the side of life with siblings. They do fight for silly things as they are kids and I need to get into everything to solve their fight.  My boy snatches things from his big sis with a loud scream.  We need to settle down things with making him happy.

My daughter is the happiest person in the Family, who actually got a live doll that can make her feel special by touching, smiling, and reacting to her.

Having siblings is actually a blessing. We share the same blood and our childhood filled with fun and love so nothing is Important after that. No matter what is going on in your life, your brother/s or sister/s are always there for you. If you are happy they will be happier and if you are sad their virtual shoulder would be always with you even though you are far away. I have lovable and caring two sisters and a brother, no one can take their places in my heart. We are a "Happy Family".

                                          Now that is called "Happiness"
